An Insider’s Guide

This week, Europe’s most glamorous oceanfront is gearing up to welcome A-List celebrities for this year’s 69th Cannes Film Festival. When Hollywood comes to town, the French Riviera more or less transforms into an expansive car park for luxury cars like Ferrari and Maserati. Last year’s attendees included Oscar winners, Lupita Nyong’o and Naomi Watts.

Over the next eleven days, you can expect to see a mix of big spenders and celebrity watchers hoping to catch a glimpse of stars like Quentin Tarantino, Kristin Stewart, Blake Lively, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Charlize Theron and Steven Spielberg.

As the paparazzi and celebrities get ready for a fanfare of flashing lights and the red carpet, the super rich are also jockeying for front row seats as the town’s hotels jump up their prices. Where our favourite celebrities stay is a closely guarded secret but some of our top spots include the historic Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez, on the ever-popular Boulevard de la Croisette.

For lunch, you can try the Michelin-starred restaurant of the Croisette’s five-star Grand Hotel. This is where Sophia Loren was famously spotted checking out the kitchen before ordering back in 2014. Another hotspot is Park 45 where stars often gather for a working lunch.

To work off your lunch, you can cycle over to Cap d’Antibes for an afternoon cup of tea at the Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc. This is where Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio like to hang out. It’s also the scene inspiration for F. Scott-Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night and where Burton and Taylor celebrated one of their honeymoons.

May isn’t the only time to visit and even if you aren’t there for Cannes, we’d still recommend as the perfect holiday destination due to it’s great choice of luxury hotels, gourmet dining and beautiful beaches.
