For the next three weeks on the winter cold streets in the heart of Melbourne, many international stars will spark some life into this city. The Melbourne Film Festival has always been a big event, and this year will be no different. The historic festival is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, and every year it makes more and more money for the local economy (last year $9.8m). Every year, up and coming talent along with established filmmakers from Australia and all around the world will be displaying their projects to try and make an impact to people’s hearts with film.

This event is not to be missed, with Melbourne being one of the important film cities in the world. Australia is a hub for talent around the world as the largest nation for film in the Asia-Pacific region, and it is no surprise that this years event will feature plenty of local as well as foreign ingenuity. With enjoyable films of every genre, MIFF 2016 is definitely going to be one of the talking points of the year in Melbourne, so make sure you are present!

How to attend

For the 2016 event, there are three different ways to attend. Firstly, individual tickets to films can be bought online. These individual passes are perfect if you want to watch specific films. Prices vary depending on the film. Secondly, eMini Passes allow you to attend 10-13 sessions for $159 (members and concession cheaper). These are great value if you wish to attend several films and events. Thirdly, the 2016 Festival Passport is for those looking for the ultimate experience at the festival. At $369, you will have access to all and any film and Talking event. The perfect package for film junkies.

Emo (The Musical)

An Australian short film, Emo is about a love affair between a Christian and a Goth at high-school.

Certain Women

A three part film about three women in crisis, starring Michelle Williams, Laura Dern and Kerstin Stewart.

Down Under

A black comedy that is based off the 2005 Cronulla riots in Sydney, this film satirizes the ignorance and racism people face even in modern multicultural society.

Paterson

Starring Adam Driver (Kylo Ren of Star Wars: The Force Awakens), this thought-provoking film follows the life of a bus driver/poet named Paterson.

Weiner

A documentary about the sexting scandal that ended Anthony Weiner’s New York mayor electoral campaign. Weiner won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance earlier this year.
